There are a lot of different ways to get knowledge. Among them, self-education, is gaining popularity. However, some people think it is not very effective, whereas others disagree.
To my mind, self-education is really effective. Firstly, it develops your ability to work with information, which is really important in modern world. A teacher is a kind of mediator, dissecting the knowledge and making it understandable, whereas self-education means you have to manage it yourself. Furthermore, self –education teaches you to manage your own learning process. You decide when and where you study, how much time you spend and what exactly you study – and that gives you some kind of freedom and develops responsibility at the same time. Moreover, self – education gives the opportunity to make the learning process suit your personal needs. If you have difficulty with a certain topic, you can spend as much time as you need to understand it.
On the other hand, some people claim that self-education is not very efficient as the majority of students just can not force themselves to study unless there is someone to demand, praise and punish. It is really difficult to make yourself concentrate on studies if you know nothing will happen even if you delay writing this essay for a couple of days.
However, I can not agree with this point of view as these people fail to understand that leaning motivation is inside you, not outside. If you do not see the use of studying, nothing can make you study.
All things considered, I am convinced that self-education is really effective. It is an excellent tool to develop learner independence.
